AIIJ Fellowship Program

The African Institute for Investigative Journalism is inviting journalists in rural Uganda to pitch investigative story ideas on corruption and accountability, climate change and environmental crime, human rights violations and access to justice. 

This call is part of AIIJ’s objective of strengthening watchdog journalism and media reporting for accountability and promotion of human rights by providing rural journalists with the skillset and toolset needed to improve their investigative journalism reporting quality.

About the Program

Any rural journalist in the five regions of Uganda is eligible to participate. The program will accept up to 15 journalists and consists of three phases;

  1. A three-day training. The selected journalists will go through a three-day vigorous training from expert trainers. Each participant will be required to attend all the sessions. After the training, each journalist will be given a small grant to produce an investigative story.
  • Each journalist will be assigned a mentor to support them during their investigation.
  • The selected journalists will be given at least 4 months to produce their investigation.

Who should apply for the fellowship?

This fellowship is open to rural journalists working with state and private media outs, and media practitioners who seek to improve and expand their journalistic skills.

Job Purpose

  • To design and deliver high-quality motion graphics optimizes for video/ web/social media dissemination.

Main Responsibilities

  • Conceptualizes, designs, and executes the production of video content and other digital features for AIIJ on topics related to the organization’s mission.
  • Assists in coming up with project scripts and storyboards.

QUALIFICATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Academic

Bachelor’s degree or diploma in related field (fine arts, multimedia production, journalism, or social sciences) with relevant technical training in video and digital design and production.

Experience

  • At least 2 years of working as a motion editor and content development, with strong capabilities in graphics design and video production.
  • Demonstrate the ability to be creative and innovative.
  • Deep familiarity with all aspects of production including technical processes of pre-during and post-production.

Core Competences

  • Knowledge of Adobe creative cloud, specifically Premiere, After effects, Photoshop, and Illustrator required.
  • Experience working with mission-driven organizations and interest in social policy issues are strong pluses.
  • Strong time management and problem-solving skills is a plus

2. Human Resource Manager

The African Institute for Investigative Journalism (AIIJ) a not for profit media organization that is creating a home for investigative journalism in Africa seeks to hire a skilled and professional Human Resource Manager

Job Purpose

  • To plan, direct, and coordinate the administrative functions of AIIJ.

Main Responsibilities

  • Ensure quality and integrity of HR filing system by keeping all HR records.
  • Information and files clearly labeled, organized, and confidential;
  • Maintain staff personal files and ensure that all files have up-to-date information.
  • Capture and update employee personal information data accurately and timeously
  • Produce HR data and reports as required and within set deadlines

QUALIFICATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Academic

Bachelor’s degree Degree in Human resource management.

Experience

  • At least 3 years of working as a Human resource manager.
  • Demonstrate the ability to be creative and innovative.
  • Deep familiarity with all aspects of civil society organizations or media-related organizations.

3. Investigative Journalist

The African Institute for Investigative Journalism (AIIJ) a not for profit media organization that is creating a home for investigative journalism in Africa seeks to hire a skilled and professional Investigative Journalist.

Job Purpose

  • To carry out high quality visual and audio investigations for both television and radio with in set timelines.

Main Responsibilities

  • Carrying out high quality investigations.
  • Pitching investigative story ideas.
  • Scripting and voicing of investigations.
  • Assemble, prepare and set up equipment for filming which include tripods, monitors, lighting, cables and headphones.
  • Take and understand instructions from sight director and producer.
  • Keeping up to date with new investigative skills and techniques.
  • Multi-tasking.

QUALIFICATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Academic

  • Bachelors Degree in journalism and mass communication, Degree in Arts, film/ Broadcast journalism or any related course.

Experience

  • At least 2 years of working as an investigative journalist in a media organization.
  • Demonstrate ability to be creative and innovative.
  • Deep familiarity with all aspects of TV production including technical processes of pre-during and post production.

Core Competences

  • High level of interviewing skills
  • Ability to speak at least four languages fluently
  • Ability to work under minimum pressure.
