Fact-Checking Consultant needed at AIIJ

Background of the assignment

AIIJ is organizing a training for journalists to use fact checking techniques and tools to demystify deep fakes that are used to create false narratives making it difficult for people to know what to believe. This is threatening media freedom, also making it difficult for journalists to report the truth or verify the content. In recent years, there has been a growing concern over the spread of fake news, misinformation, and disinformation in Uganda. This has led to calls for increased fact-checking initiatives and training programs to help journalists and media outlets ensure that they are presenting accurate and reliable information to their audiences.

Role

To design a curriculum and develop materials for training investigative journalists in fact-checking.

Deliverables

  1. 1

    Develop a tailor-made curriculum on fact-checking and investigative journalism.

  2. 2

    Train Journalists on fact checking.

  3. 3

    Mentor journalists in their newsroom to do work on fact checking.

Qualifications

A masters’ degree in any related course is appreciated and training in journalism and experience in fact checking training is most preferred.

Experience

  1. 1

    At least 5 years of relevant work experience on issues related to deep fakes, debunking fake news, vulnerability reduction and capacity development.

  2. 2

    Proven experience and knowledge of Uganda’s framework and policies on fact checking

  3. 3

    At least 5 years of experience in the development of fact checking training manual and curriculum.

  4. 4

    Experience in policy analysis, and development work in the area of fact checking and related issues.

  5. 5

    Excellent written and oral communication skills in English, including the ability to effectively communicate technical subject matter into actionable products for different users
